Malware is a broad term that includes unwanted/harmful code such as viruses (that replicates and spreads), spyware, adware, and more.
So, anti-virus focuses on preventing/getting rid of viruses, whereas anti-malware covers a variety of threats. However, many ‘anti-virus’ programs do not just cover viruses, but rather other types of malware also.
It is important to install an anti-virus/anti-malware software that is SAFE and RELIABLE.
Avast! Free Antivirus This program scans and protects your device against a variety of malware – viruses, worms, adware, and more. It protects your personal data, as well as having a password manager. It is free to download, and there is a custom installation process where you choose what components of the program you want. There is also a recommended installation process that you can choose. |
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free This is not and anti-virus software (it cannot protect your device from infection – the Premium version will protect your device from infection), but rather, it removes malware already on your system, and it does an excellent job of it. It is not recommended to have this program installed just by itself – it is suggested that this program be installed alongside an anti-virus software such as Avast and Avira as mentioned above. It will not interfere with any anti-virus software installed. |
These two programs require payment, but they are excellent at detecting and removing malware. Note that they are quite expensive, but they come with an initial free trial.
